Hey, I am a mom of a beautiful 12 year old boy with down syndrome.  He is retarded.  There is nothing funny about the way that the words retarded and retard are thrown around in our society.  I hate to admit that before I had a child with mental imparement I used the words loosely myself.  I did not realize the hurt that they cause people and how they strip people of their dignity when not used in proper context.  It would never be accepted to use the word nigger so freely.  However, just as the word nigger holds much hurt and hate so does the word retard or retarded.  I dont know what is taking our society so long to catch on to this.  I think much of it is ignorace.  I believe people are not aware.  As far as the movie goes; I usually enjoy the actors in this movie but there is no way that my family nor the many families I know whos lives have been touched by a person with special needs will ever support such a movie.  I hope Holly wood and society has its eyes opened by this communities outrage.  The thoughtless but blatent discrimination has got to stop.

My name is Val Surbey and I live in Canada.  I was horrified to learn of this movie and it's use of the word "retard".  I have forwarded comments and information from the national groups both here and in the US to build up support to avoid supporting this movie.  My son has Down syndrome and he has just turned 18 years old.  I also have three children with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.)  Our children are adopted.  They have seen some of the comments and are very distressed that anyone would consider their disabilities... in this way...this is totally disrepectful to our population of individuals with intellectual disabilities.  We have worked very long and very hard to have our folks included in society and community which is their right, and by releasing this horrible film you have helped set us back years.  It flies in the face of the UN convention on the rights of individuals with disabilities in terms of affording them respect and inclusion.  Shame on you and all of your people who took part in this movie.  I used to enjoy watching Ben Stiller and Robert Downey JR., but never again will I visit the theatre to see them again, regardless of what of film they appear in.

Wow. You remind me of michael moore in Team America - you really think the Canadians are going to stop hollywood, eh? I doubt it - the grand majority of those who see it, won't whine and cry like hippies (hence, you.) The movie was funny as hell, and I'm probably going to go back and spend another 7 bucks to see it again on the big screen. Now thats what I'm talking aboot. :)

STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP.  You have now just noticed that there is hate in the world and people will make you mad or upset.  Come on how long have you been in LA LA Land for?  You need to realize that the earth has never been a perfect place to live on.  The word retard is a politically correct way of saying STUPID.  It's  a shortened version of sayin  Mental Retardation.  Like every other word it's just a word and when you start making such a big deal out of that it pisses people off.   I'm only saying truth COME BACK WITH YOUR SENSE.  SENSE . SENSE OF REALITY.  LOOK REALITY UP IN A DICTIONARY. Better yet watch some one dying of cancer or a video of a TERMINALLY ILL KID.  They suffer.   My brother has a disability but no one gives him any special kinds of treatment.   You just have to become a stronger person and stop being so weak minded.  Special needs people are differant and that doesn't mean they deserve special treatment or anybody elses sympathy.   You should stop making drama and start living your life.  Your to caught up in LA LA LAND.  Learn that no matter how hard you try to fight there will always be some one with opinions differant from yours.   You can't argue about to differant subjects  because your both the losers. ITS JUST A MOIVE.    Look at the fact that Kevin Downey Jr. is playing the role of a Black Man.   You Need to just let things go and learn.    One day the pain will be gone.   No one sayed you had to watch the movie but you did and now you live with that.  I usually don't get involved in stuff like that because I know how things are in the United States.   IT WAS NEVER BE A PERFECT WORLD OR WILL NEVER BE A PERFECT WORLD.   What about War people killing each over for senseless things.   Kids die every day but does any one care.  No.   You need to stop trying to fight just so you can win.   And walk around here like your shit don't stank and piss even more people off.   Come back to reality and Learn to Understand.   Only then things will be better for you.   What about those people you lose there sense of HOPE.  You only create problems.  Why because you are humans.   Humans will always create a problem.   Be a stronger person and don't fight.   Ben Stiller or anybody will say anything its there job fucking ACTOR. THEY ARE GETTING PAID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.  Your not.  AND THAT BLATENT DISCRIMINATION WILL NEVER STOP.  LEARN.  YOU FUCKING IDIOT.   You get mad at stupid things. And your kind trys to rebel.  Read the bible cruel is the messenger for the rebellous one.   People get mad everyday it will only lead to violent senseless drama.  Veterans of war.  PEOPLE THAT FIGHT SENSELESSLY FOR A COUNTRY THAT DOESN'T KNOW RESPECT ARE SPIT ON EVERYDAY BY STUFF LIKE THIS AND OTHER THINGS.    How long did it take you that society perfect.  It just know Hit you in your ass.   Something so petty took to the limit and mad you mad.  THINK ABOUT IT.   DO SOME RESEARCH AND YOU BE SURPISED ABOUT HOW LONG SOCIETY HAS BEEN HATEFUL AND CRUEPT.    Theres nothing we can do because it only takes one to ruin it for others.  THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY.  How people like me that just want to live there are forced to hear about how much you have to suffer.  You don't now the first thing about suffering.  People with out disabilities suffer everybody suffers you don't need a reason to suffer or any kind or deformity.  Society is deformed.  You are deformed.  I am deformed.  We are all deformed.  Don't let your arrogances get in the way.  Or corrupt you.  Just let people Live there lies and stop putting your opinions out to were people like me just don't want ANY MORE TO DO WITH DRAMA.  Those people who have a deformity are brainwashed by people who feel sorry for them.  Now They start feeling sorry for themselves.   I DONE WITH EVERYBODIES COMPLAINING AND THINKING THERE WAY IS THE BEST.  MAYBE IN LA LA LAND.  BUT IN REALITY IT DON'T MEAN SHIT.

    Dear 1proudmama & Val,

I am myself a quadriplegic, incurred from a spinal injury four years ago, and I also have a beloved cousin who is mentally retarded or intellectually disabled or whatever the politically correct term is these days.  I did not find the above clip offensive in any way whatsoever, it was not denigrating people with intellectual disabilities at all but rather it was a satirical parody of the absurd lengths that method actors will go to for their "craft".  The joke is absolutely by all means NOT on individuals with disabilities, the joke is on idiots who make fun of and exploit people with disabilities.  I can completely understand where you are coming from but if the disabled community is to break down stereotypes then we need to address the fact that there are idiots out there who actually do use terms like a retard and cripple in a derogatory manner, so what if this fact is addressed in a humourous way?  Nevertheless, no one has seen the full movie yet so I don't know why everyone is being so quick to judge.  But based on this clip I have no problem thus far.  It's called satire.

    Regards,
    Rachel

      Hello Rachel,

Thanks for your oppinion.  However, you try and explain that to the many children and my own who will be teased and submitted to harrassment after their peers get in to see the movie.  Try to tell the peers it is not appropriate and hurtful after they have seen it on the "big screen" and everyone there mindlessly laughed at it.  This type of blaten discrimination is just not acceptable in this day and age and Hollywood should be let know that they are a part of the problem.  By not taking a stand we are not educating society about the discriminatory and degrading uses of the term.  I can appreciate your stance having a disability yourself but my oopinion is still the same.  I must advocate for my child where my child has no voice and sociatal awareness is a large part of my roll as his advocate.

The movie is R rated, children aren't allowed in.  Needless to say schoolyards can be vicious, nasty places and it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to educate children.  It is abundantly clear that this is a satire directed towards adults and it in no way condones direct teasing of people with disabilities.  The uproar surrounding this film is not educating anyone, it's just generating publicity for the film.  And really, I live with a disability every day and I know many other people with disabilities, why does everything have to be so serious all the time?  There is a difference between satire and the direct teasing of someone.  I was also of the idea that the point of the satire was to make fun of the idiots who use such language.  I sincerely understand your desire to advocate for your child, but as I also have a disability myself and come into contact with people of all sorts of disabilities on a regular basis I cannot see any problem in poking fun at idiots who perpetuate stereotypes against disabled people.  Again,... it's... a... satire!

If you don't like it don't see it... someone is always has to get their damn panties up their butt.... Whats next: what are you going to control? Too many liberals.... move on.... it is just a word... like queer gay, faggot... back in the day these words meant something else... happy stupid, fag( was a smoke),,, come on....

You are exactly right there are to many over sensitive people.   People need to learn that the earth has never and will never be PERFECT place to live.   People need to wake up from LA LA LAND  which is pretty much where everybody on this earth live and come to sense with reality.  Because no matter how much you think your voice counts it doesn't.   People will always make you mad but you have to be stronger than that.  Mentally challenged, special isn't much differant then the word retard WAKE THE FUCK UP.   People like that piss me off so much.  Instead of teaching your kid the right from wrong which nobody on this earth does right.   Why don't you teach your kid responsbility and understanding.

    1proudmama & Val,

The fact that we are writing on this board, about the subject matter that we are discussing is an indication that it is a tremendous blessing to live in a free country with freedom of speech. I agree with MsRachy. This movie clip is very satirical. The real problem here is how people are so quick to point fingers and so uppity to say that something isn't "PC" or might offend when its a simple, satirical joke in question. Belonging to a religious group myself that is often ridiculed or poked fun at (in mainstream media I might add), I know what it is like to be discriminated against...but I realize that it comes with the territory and its the ignorance of others that is to blame. That is something I do in my own privacy. I don't make a federal case about it and talk about how people of my faith have been wronged so badly so often. Satire is funny. This movie is funny. Busy-bodies that have nothing better to do than point fingers and be up in arms about silly little jokes are the ones that are....dare I say it?....retarded.

Ben Stiller, Paramount Learn That You Never Go Full Retard [Cinematic Uprisings]
Published 8/6/2008 by Neil Miller at Film School Rejects
It appears that with Tropic Thunder just over a week away from its theatrical release, not everyone is laughing at its often ridiculous premise. In fact, it appears that some groups have now started to come forward to speak out against elements of the film they feel to be insensitive and inappropriate. And no, we are not talking about the part where actor Robert Downey Jr. portrays an actor who has his skin dyed black in order to play the role intended for an African American. We are talking about Simple Jack, the parody movie within a movie in which Ben Stiller’s character Tugg Speedman is seen as the big ...

Here's Robert Downey Jr in 'blackface' in Tropic Thunder
Published 8/8/2008 by Ben Child at Film: Film blog | guardian.co.uk
The debate surrounding the return of blackface has been raging for a while here at the Guardian . Far be it for me to stoke the fires of controversy further, but I wonder quite what the reaction is going to be to Robert Downey Jr's performance in Tropic Thunder, the new Ben Stiller comedy that hits cinemas here on September 19. Downey Jr plays the Australian actor Kirk Lazarus (with vintage Natural Born Killers accent), who in turn plays the African American Sgt Osiris, one of a group of actors who unwittingly end up in a real battle whilst trying to shoot a war movie in Vietnam. The idea is that the award-winning Lazarus has actually undergone surgery ...

15 Characters Who Unconvincingly Play Another Race
Published 8/8/2008 by Christopher Campbell at SpoutBlog
Yesterday’s list dealt with Tom Cruise’s performance in Tropic Thunder. Today, a response to Robert Downey Jr.’s role in the same film as a white actor portraying a black soldier in a war movie (seen in the above clip). Doesn’t it seem such an original and shocking idea? I guess not if you see it as an update on blackface. Fortunately, it’s different when it’s an actor playing a character who makes himself up to look black. It’s funny. But isn’t it typically more acceptable when the make-up isn’t quite as ...
