Born Ellas McDaniel in McComb, Mississippi in 1928, Diddley went up to Chicago to join the emergent blues scene there in the early fifties. He quickly made a name for himself for his energetic stage shows, his odd rectangular-shaped guitar, and the signature rhythm to which he played most of his songs. Primal rock and blues musician Bo Diddley, who helped cast the sonic template of rock more than 50 years ago with a signature syncopated rhythm that became universally recognized as "the Bo Diddley beat," died Monday. He was 79. Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., spokeswoman Susan Clary said.
