A Simple Explanation of the Strike

Here's a video some Writers' Guild folk put together. The production value is not the best but it's a good guide to the issues being fought over. I’ve noticed some confusion in the comments for any strike post that I’ve put up, people still don’t really understand why writers are striking. Here’s the two big things writers are asking for:
An increase of 4 cents(from 4 to 8) for each DVD sold with their content. That’s right, on a DVD valued at $19.99, writers get 4 cents.
Secondly, they want to receive revenue from new media, ie streaming video on websites, webisodes, etc. Studios ...

Here are a couple of YouTube clips -- clip #1 and clip #2 -- that seem to just cut through the crap and spell out the strike situation clean and plain. The cleanest and most Sesame Street -y, posted on 11.5, is a primer about what the writers want and what the studios are offering/not offering in response. On the DVD front, it basically says that writers get 4 cents from the sale of a $19 or $20 retail DVD, and that what they're looking for is 8 cents per DVD. Of course, the studio profit margin off that $19 or $20, after expenses and skimmings, is about $5 per DVD. But 8 cents out of five bucks isn't ...

Well, I have been pretty much quiet on the strike since it began this past Monday, but a great little video has come to my attention that lays it all out on the line and explains to everyone what is going on. Some people are saying that the Writer’s Guild of America strike isn’t going to effect the movie industry, at least not immediately, as much as television. While that’s true, people need to remember that it is still is going to effect it. For one, writers can’t do re-writes on scripts, and if you know anything about the film industry, it’s that scripts are re-written and re-written often, many times during the actual filming of the movie. Secondly, there are many writers that collaborate with directors on set. This won’t be happening for a while either and that’s generally ...

Really, whether the WGA is right, or wrong, the move to file charges just creates an ancillary process that will delay any further talks, and has probably shut down any unofficial negotiations going on behind the curtain.
