It was big news that I Am Legend went through a series of reshoots. One of the big changes was the film’s ending, which was reshot to give the film a more commercial conclusion. The special edition DVD hits store shelves on March 18th, and the alternative ending has been leaked onto YouTube. I’d be interested to hear what you guys think, so please post your thoughts in the comments. I feel that this is a much better conclusion, aside from the voiceover driving sequence which book ends the footage. Also, can anyone please explain to me how they drove out of Manhattan if all the bridges were destroyed… Am I missing ...

/Film brings to our attention the fact that the alternate ending that was shot, prompting several reshoots for I Am Legend and will be available on the March 18th special edition DVD and Blu-ray is now online. I will say one thing, if you have not seen the film and don't want to be spoiled don't watch this clip, because the overall result is pretty much the same. As for comments on the alternate ending... I think both endings are awful and this one is definitely worse. Sorry, a coincidental zombie love story does not intrigue me, and as Peter at /Film points out, "[weren't] all the bridges were destroyed?"

I have to admit, I didn’t dislike I am Legend nearly as much as I thought I would going into it. There are some honestly great parts to that film… and some equally horrible parts. I didn’t read the book… which is a GOOD thing because that allowed me to just watch the movie for what it was… but even without knowing the book had an entirely different ending, I still didn’t like the way this movie ended. Having said that, Movie Blog reader Jarred sent me the heads up on this alternate ending to I Am Legend. Good grief… I may not have liked the theatrical ending…. but crap this one is 10x worse. Good decision ...

Alternate 'I Am Legend' Ending Is Far Superior

I don't know how long this alternate ending to I Am Legend will last but if you get a chance, you should watch it if you've seen the movie. This ending is IMHO far superior to the abrupt version in the theatrical release, and fits in better with something that happens in the film about midway through. I didn't post this up earlier because it was only available on YouTube, and videos of this sort get yanked pretty quickly and them I'm left with a useless post. :-) GameTrailers.com has a version which I've embedded below, which will hopefully hang around a bit longer. ...

... that vampires once were. Instead director Francis Lawrence treated us to a scenic, idealistic Hollywood ending, which I suppose had we not read the book would have been more palatable. But since many of us did, it wasn't. Well an alternate ending has leaked online that, in my mind, pays at least some attention to the author's intents. I think it's a vast improvement, and also much creepier, even if it does still have a bit too much of a Hollywood ending. But don't listen to me, watch for yourself.
