Young Jeezy - “Crazy World” Video
The Smoking Section —
Not my first choice for a follow-up video but the song has constantly grown on me. Say what you will about Young; he managed to tip-toe his way towards “social consciousness” in his raps with The Recession. It’s nothing on the level X-Clan or The Coup. What it is though is Jeezy expanding his scope every so slightly so that it’s not so consumed with himself & the trap.

WE EAT SO MANY SHRIMP —
Every time I listen to The Recession or just see Jeezy on TV or in a magazine or whatever it reminds me that he's the only real rap star we've got right now. Wayne stopped trying over a year ago, to the point where I can't decide whether him mugging it up with Kid Rock at a country awards show is worse because I didn't even bat an eye or because he mugged it up with Kid Rock at a country awards show. Kanye was always more pop star than rap star but even on that front he's on a sabbatical. You could maybe argue T.I., who sold out but still really went at ...

Prefix —
Young Jeezy s The Recession proved to be a pretty prescient title: the album came out before our recent financial collapse. Crazy World on tape attacks the realities of poverty in the hood (gentrification, paying for medical bills when barely being able to afford to keep the lights on, violence, etc.) better than the video, which seems to posit that the recession will lead to people in Palin and McCain masks gallivanting around dusty streets with dancing militants and menacing people who burn posters on sticks. That would be pretty crazy, but I can t imagine that phenomenon going worldwide. [ Nahright ...

"Music Video Round-Up": Young Jeezy's "My President Is Black" & Relics of Cynicism
The House Next Door —
By Brandon Soderberg "My President," directed by Gabriel Hart Like most Young Jeezy songs, “My President” is a monster. Unlike most Young Jeezy songs, there's a stomping, seething sense of joy and a little less get-money nihilism here, as it celebrates Obama's presidency, or even the possibility of it (the song was recorded when Obama received the Democratic nomination back in June). The song's the coup de grâce of Jeezy's fucked-up economy-obsessed album The Recession, wrapping up the frustrations of the previous seventeen ...
